National Events

CTC clubs across the country organised rides and events for a climate change week in mid July. To find out what happened in your area and to lend your support or get involved, please check out our Local Events page.

We have also been out on the road, taking a CycleHero exhibition stand to a range of National events throughout the country across the summer. Here we have shown the CycleHero film and distributed leaflets and copies of our DVD, the public reponse has been extremely positive. Some of the events which have taken place so far, and those that are still to come are listed below:

June 3rd Challenge Ride - Cosham Wiltshire

The Cosham Challenge Rides were a great success again this year, organised by Matt Mallinder, freshly back from his honeymoon.
A Cyclehero stand was present at the start and finish with a large number of leaflets distributed and a lot of interest generated.

June 3rd North Yorkshire Youth Games

We had a full exhibition stand at the N.Yorkshire Youth Games, a popular event with several thousand visitors. The stand included a life sized Cycle hero dummy (see photo) and the advert was shown on a video screen causing a great deal of interest.

June 9-10th Tri-Vets Events

The Tri Vets are 100 mile rides exclusively for the over 50's once every 3 years. This year we had 10 major events across the country in Oxfordshire; Chester & North Wales; West Yorkshire; Essex; Leicestershire & Rutland (see Photo); Coventry & Warwickshire; West Kent; Bristol; Swansea & Wales and Scotland. CycleHero leaflets were handed out at the start of the rides.

June 18th National PR launch event

On Monday June 18th, CTC officially celebrated the launch of the new CycleHero campaign with a Press launch and a premiere of the advert plus a screening of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth at the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Sq London . Over 150 invited guests attended the launch, which was a great success.

June 16-24th Bike Week Festival

A number of events were held throughout Bike Week with CycleHero support. On Monday 18th CTC held a CycleHero Car Amnesty encouraging commuters to try cycling to & from home, by offering them free 24 hour bike hire & free overnight parking (see photo).
Also on Wednesday 20th Guilford council held a Bike Breakfast supplying tea & bacon butties to all cycle commuters. CTC had a CycleHero stand and distributed leaflets plus DVD's - even managing to get the mayor to pose for us (see photo).

June 22-24th Glastonbury Festival

We had a presence at the Bicycology tent and are awaiting confirmation of if & when our film was shown on the big screens.

June 22-24th Mountain Mayhem

We had a stand at the Mountain Mayhem 24hr Mountain Bike race where we showed the film and distributed CycleHero leaflets throughout the day with a great deal of interest from the MTB community. Over 5,000 people attended the event and we competed in the race as part of the 7 Stanes team.

June 23rd Challenge Rides - York

The 100km and 150km challenge rides set off early on Saturday morning from York Race Course and were well attended. (see photo). Many of those completing the rides then visited the Cycle Show and the CycleHero stand there.

June 23-24th York Cycle Show

Despite the adverse weather conditions, the York Cycle Show was a great success. There was a major CycleHero exhibition stand with a big screen showing our film to the crowds and visitors to the stand being given information leaflets and copies of our DVD. (see photo). The overwhelming response was positive with numerous requests to be allowed to show the film at schools, youth clubs & local group meetings etc and many people taking CTC contact details to follow up on future linked promotional opportunities with the CycleHero programme.

June 30th Shropshire Youth Games

A great deal of interest was generated by our stand at this event with our film showing and the CycleHero dummy drawing in the crowds.

June 30th - end July Film Showing in National Cinemas

The CycleHero advert was shown for 4 weeks in cinemas across the UK. Details of the cinema addresses and which films the advert was shown alongside were listed on this web site a week in advance. The advert will continue to be shown in a smaller number of cinemas until the end of September.

July 6-8th Tour de France

What an amazing 3 days! From Friday afternoon through to the close on Sunday evening we had 10's of thousands of people visiting our CycleHero & CTC stand. At times it was almost too busy, but there was an electric atmosphere from the crowds who had gathered for the event and big screen broadcast of the opening ceremony, the Prologue and the first stage. We got fantastic public feedback and support for our film and the whole CycleHero campaign. We also had many new members signing up, taking the pledge to cycle more regularly. A hugely successful event

July 7th Live Earth Concert

We were all so busy at the Tour de France we did not get chance to see any of Live Earth. However it appears that despite our best efforts we were unable to get our film shown on the big screen.

July 14-22nd Cyclehero Week

This week was dedicated as a CycleHero; Climate Change Activation week by CTC clubs. We arranged a series of dedicated rides and public events + film evenings across the country. For further details and photos of what happened in your area, see the Local Events page of this site.

July 21st - 29th New Forrest Cycling Week

We had planned to have a CycleHero display at the time trial events and have one evening entertainment night themed around CycleHero and environmental / Climate Change issues. However with the atrocious weather conditions we had a smaller though still positive display for those hardy souls who braved the floods.

August 12th Challenge Ride

The highly sucessful Phil & Friends challenge rides in the beautiful surroundings of the Peak district attracted a strong turnout. We had a CycleHero display stand communicating our messages and distributig leaflets & DVD's

August 25-27th Mildenhall Rally

We had a display stand at the Rally over the Bank Holiday weekend where large numbers of cyclists visited us and voiced their support.

September 3-9th World Mountain Bike Championships

We had a busy stand alongside the Scottish Forestry commission at this major event in Fort Willian, Scotland,
where we distribed leaflets & DVD's + showed our film on a tv screen to a wide audience. We also had our film shown regularly on the event main big screen. The event was a great success throughout the week, with over 10,000 attending on the final day.

September 8th Derby EcoFest

We had a CycleHero stand a this major Midlands "green" event promoting cycling as a sustainable transport option.

September 9-15th Tour of Britain 2007 Race

After "organisational "difficulties", we made it to the start of the Tour of Britain Prologue at Crystal Palace with a CycleHero stand to cheer on a Mark Cavendish victory.
We had our stand at the start of Stage 1 in Reading and at the Finish in Southampton to once again see Mr Cavendish lead the field home.
We had a stand at Stage 3 in Worcester and a big exhibition stand at the Finish in Glasgow. The Glasgow event was a great success with thousands on Glasgow green in a festival atmosphere and a great deal of interest in our CTC / CycleHero messages + a massed band of scottish bagpipes to keep us entertained whilst waiting for the riders.

September 16th Pedal for Scotland

After a fantastic day in Glasgow on the Saturday our roadshow moved on to Edinburgh for the mass public ride - 50 miles from Glasgow to Edinburgh. Over 4,000 made the ride despite the attrocious weather conditions, heavy rain and winds. Despite the conditions we still managed to give out leaflets & DVD's to a large number of riders and spread the CycleHero message

September 22nd ITWC

In Town Without a Car day. We supported a number of events around the country with local volunteers. We also had a big stand at the events in Teddington and Richmond.

September 23rd Freewheel

This was a major mass public ride into central London and around St James's park. Almost 40,000 people registered to take part and it was a fantastic spectacle and a great opportunity to spread our message. We had a major CycleHero presence at the event. with an exhibition stand on The Mall and had a Cycle Maximus bike touring round the course handing out leaflets and sweets to the riders.

October 11-14th London Cycle Show

We were a major sponsor at this prestigious show and had a prime stand where we met existing and prospective members. We recieved fantastic feeback on our overall CTC stand and particularly the Cyclehero project. Show visitors from around the world were interested in the advert that we were showing on a big screen and took away copies of the film on DVD.
